Freedom To "Rock" (1978 edition)

This afternoon's coffee event is taking place at a Syracuse chainlet called Freedom of Espresso. I'm at the flagship location in the uber-fashionable Armory Square district, while the radio in the background expels the stale air of a local station whose playlist hasn't changed one bit since 1978 or so (1978 in Syracuse, mind you, so there's not one whiff of anything resembling the "new wave" so popular in more sophisticated burgs around that time). As my drink was being expertly mixed, Steve Miller's "Jungle Love" flatulated its way from the speakers. That gave way to Skynyrd, of all things -- !! -- followed by a little Tom Petty (bad Petty, that is, in the form of "Free Falling").

The Event Of The Decade

Orville Redenbacher Would've Been 100 Today, Had He Not Drowned In His Hot Tub 12 Years Ago

A rattlesnake bit a golfing enthusiast somewhere in the Continental U.S. today, according to Cable News Network coverage on view at the Philadelphia airport. The earthquake-oriented radioactive water spill in Japan is getting about the same level of coverage -- apparently, the possibility of the birth of Godzilla doesn't mean much to CNN executives.

Coffee at O'Hare

My flight to Philadelphia is delayed a bit, and thus I nurse a coffee from the Corner Bakery Cafe. I hadn't planned to consume any coffee this morning -- this would've been a truly eventful occurrence -- in the wake of a rare (albeit mild) hangover occasioned by a trip last night to see the inimitable Jay Reatard at the Hideout once I'd had my fill of De La Soul (i.e., about five minutes' worth).

On to Syracuse. I wonder if it'll be even more beleagured than the last time my Salt City and I spent time together. No need to answer that rhetorical question.
